  • A.R.T. beat prep! (ALIGN)

Why A.R.T. Beat? After almost 14 years of instructing vigorous group exercise classes Billy was convinced there was a better way to connect and condition the body; a way that didn’t require one to constantly push their body into the red zone. This ‘no pain, no gain’ approach left something to be desired and was simply not sustainable in the long-term. Sure, he had a lot of clients get great results while they were immersed in their programs, but as soon as they stepped away from the rigid routines, their results stopped too. Billy knew in his heart that intense exercise is never the solution to the common problems that plague 99% of our society; constant fatigue, obesity, stress, and chronic dis-ease. To heal these ailments one must be willing to slow down, reconnect to their breath and recharge the body’s seven main energy centers through movement and personal expression. That is what A.R.T. Beat is all about; breathing-focused movements that activate the body. This activation is enhanced when this movements are accompanied by the beating of a live drum. Your phsyciality snycs with the vibrations of the drums and creates an experience like no other. What is A.R.T. Beat? A.R.T. Beat is a group class designed to enhance your vital life force through movement, focused breathing techniques, live music, and the use of art. A.R.T. Beat allows you to experience a piece of your Tribal past that you have been disconnected from. What will I need for A.R.T. Beat? More than anything you will need an open mind and willingness to experience fitness in a new way. A.R.T. Beat is a movement based class, so please be prepared to partake in various breathing exercises. Wearing comfortable clothing is highly suggested. All art supplies will be supplied for you. Please feel free to bring your own drawing materials if you prefer. We will also have yoga mats avaialbe for you to use, but suggest you bring your own. Cost: $35 per session, pre-paid. • Bewaa on malletKAT- Gina Ferrera

Bewaa (traditional "gyil" music from northern Ghana) played on malletKAT (electronic percussion).

  • MalletKAT -"Oru Seco"- ft. Shawn Hennessey, Gina Ferrera, Cito Caravallo Candell (Leana Song)

...here is an electronic version of the bata drum "Oru Seco" (ellegua thru Ochossi) done on malletKAT. The samples of the bata were recorded by Shawn Hennessey. Before ableton, I used Pro Tools and Reason to import the samples place them to create the 3 drums on a 4 octave malletKAT so Shawn could be in the middle playing the IYA on one side of the KAT and Cito and I on the other side playing the ITOTELE (cito) and OKONKOLO (gina) parts. you can see us giggling in astonishment as it was almost sounding "recreated" and for me it was super nerdy because after all the tech'ing out I could finally hear it all together 3 people the 3 parts on one malletKAT! Cool! In respect and honor of the tradition! Recorded in Philadelphia 2010

  • Togo Atsia: Alokli ft Peace Elewonu

Performance at Swarthmore U, Philadelphia 4/24/09. This Atsia dance style comes from the Ewes of Togo & Benin. This dance is traditionally performed only by women. Our stage presentation is a beautiful but tragically condensed adaptation of an all-day event. In West Africa when this style became popular (I think in the 1950s, not sure), it wasn't easy for women of the community to speak out about social issues Atsia was created by a group of strong women as a forum where women could speak out. The music and songs are composed by women, and the event is run by women. Short skits are presented where social issues or grievances are acted out, with the male roles played by women dressed as men. After each skit, a musical episode reinforces the message with song and drum language (eg "don't spend money on silly things", "don't flirt with women when you already have 3 wives", "pay your debts", etc).

  • Kinka: Alokli West African Drums

Performance at Swarthmore U, Philadelphia 4/24/09. Kinka is social music popular among the Ewes of West Africa. It is also the perfect music to play while the audience is filing in (studies show they will sit down 17% faster than if you play elevator music). The drum language can get a bit racy but the songs are political, calling for things like justice, good behavior and protesting corruption & greed. The community will normally sing & dance along with this very danceable music. One thing you can see clearly in Kinka is drum dialogs. The master drum calls out questions and the supporting drum must answer correctly. There are hundreds of dialogs so each performance can feel spontaneous, and the lead drum can respond to particular songs or dance styles.

  • Adzohu (Adzogbo): Alokli ft Peace Elewonu

Performance at Swarthmore U, Philadelphia 4/24/09. Adzohu is from the Fon people (closely related to the Ewe) of Togo. It chronicles the battle between ancestral Ewes and colonial occupation in West Africa. The shorter dances tell a story which is usually spoken to the audience before each section. Listen to the spoken language and then hear the same words spoken on the master drum. The longer Ago section is "knocking on the door" of the spirit world, asking for permission to enter. Heavy use of polyrhythm is a clue that this section has a spiritual purpose.

Mixed and Mastered by Lucas Dutton www.ginaferrera.com https://ginaferrera1.bandcamp.com/track/these-petals Yearning sought the highland. Heartbreak sought the plain. I was caught somewhere Floating in between. "Gi, Passing through the city won't you... Weave that tale back to me." From city plots to gates where gardens' locked. The waterfalls, the forest floors. I'm sifting through your hemisphere. Just to hear this song. The misty lane On which you drive upon The muddy pool you chose to dive Into forgiving Is this black hole of time. Waiting for the sun to split us open. Waiting for the sun to split us open waiting for the sun. waiting for the sun Waiting for the sun to split us open. These boots wiped off from dusty pages Yesterday's prescription left untaken still Waiting for the sun to split us open. (4x) Lifting up these petals, peachy push pops, salty tear drops All collide a drop that drips like sap that hits these roots in grounds that shoot down, Grip tight the tool you use to move and pry to prop them open. Arms stretched out to Arms stretched out to wait wait wait Waiting for the sun to split us open. Waiting for the sun to split us open. waiting for the sun waiting for the sun waiting for the sun to split us open.

  • These Petals- Gina Ferrera

These Petals from the album "Laws of Nature" by Gina Ferrera- Production, Composition, vocals, malletKAT, drums, percussion, lyrics.
